Shelves

When I was young
I discovered a shelf
in my school library
that I had never seen before.

I could not believe
what I found there.

I read everything on that shelf.

Then I found the same books
in our public library—
but they had so many more of them!

I consumed them all—
and they granted me
a superpower:
now I write books
that belong on those shelves.

Never underestimate
the power
of a shelf.
