Tale as Old as Time

I tell you now a tale as old as time;
'tis not a tale of love, but one of rhyme;
of words set down in careful symmetry—
of fearsome truth wove in bright tapestry.

The reader takes a tithe of what she sees,
but swears that she has drained it to the lees;
the giver sheds a tear and tries to find
some surer portal into heart and mind.

Alas—there is no way to bridge the gap!
Each probing step falls on another trap!
I pray you learn the moral of this tale:
all love craves touch when arcane lyrics fail.
